I bought a compressor drier and expansion valve for my 91 toyota celica st with 1.6L and 5 speed ... are there any special things i need to know? i will replace the parts and then recharge with r-12 .. yes i already have my hands on it. i don't want to use 134 unless absolutely necessary .. i've heard things about "purging" the system .. just looking for more details about the work involved ... i'd like to do it myself as the car isn't worth enough to justify dropping money on a mechanic.. i've already installed an engine in the car so it shouldn't be too hard right?
Update:well the clutch locked up and just cut the system off so no major damage .. i know someone with a vacuum pump and can store the r 12 .. so i just need to pull all old refrigerant out and then recharge it? if i'm sticking with 12 i shouldn't need to change hose right? they are in good condition

The main difficulty is evacuating the current R12 in the system and then putting the correct amount back in. You do not want to evacute it into the general air as that is bad. You need to have the correct gauges and pumps to pull the R12 out and store it.
Also, if you are going to swith to 134, then you need to replace all AC hoses as well, because the R12 oil has saturated the hoses and it does not mix well with 134.
Another thing is if your compressor broke badly, then it spewed metal deposits throughout your AC system and it will need to be flushed to get all those deposits out before you put on a new system or it will just screw it up again in short order.
If you have the right equipment it is a medium difficult job, just mostly time consuming.
Good luck!
You should just take it to a dealership. You wont be able to properly do it with out the necessary tools. Once those parts are replace you need to lubricate the o-rings with a special lubricant. Then when you have all the parts in, you must evacuate the system with a vacuum pump. This removes moisture and air. Then after that, you can put the refridgerant in.
