I was asked to find the "simple average"using only the minimum and maximum of a data set. Would this mean i just find the sum of those 2 numbers and divide by 2? my data set is this:
-6.4
-4.7
3.3
9.5
15.7
18.4
23
20.9
16.3
8.3
2.4
-5.8
Also how would I find the amplitude of the data with respect to the simple average? Thanks in advance!

The simple average using only the minimum and maximum values of a data set would be the sum of those two numbers divided by 2 as you indicate. Obviously, that's not a very good representation of the true average.
The positive amplitude of the data is the difference between the maximum value and the average value. The negative amplitude is the difference between the minimum value and the average value. Basically, the amplitude is a measure of how far the maximum value (a minimum can be considered as a maximum value in the negative direction) is from the mean.
Hope this helps,
