While I've never worked at that deli, I have been a deli cook. It's pretty easy once you're shown how to do everything and get a sense of what needs to be done first, second, later, etc. My first day I was shown how to bake the cookies, warned about the oven (you had to rotate pans since it heated unevenly), trayed bacon for baking, and slicing meats and cheeses. From there I also went on to make salads. I knew how to cook on a flat grill, just not breakfasts, so that was a little daunting, but it turned out to be easy, just don't burn brown spots on the eggs. Remember to wash your hands frequently, and the moment you clock in, that impresses them that you care about cleanliness. Keep all the areas clean and perfect. Be polite to customers, memorize the menu so you know what options they have, like "Do you want that on white, wheat, sourdough, light rye, or dark rye?" or what choice of cheese they want on it. Always try to upsell. Like if something doesn't come with cheese, ask if they'd like cheese on it. More profit for the deli so hopefully you get a raise in the future. I'm sure they'll be training you the first few days, not throwing you to the wolves. You'll be great, I loved that job. And smile!
