Do Australians consider Queenslanders different from other Australians?
I was watching Billy Connolly's World Tour of Australia and he said that Australians have a different view of Queenslanders, are they more tough than your average Aussie?
Until the 1980s, they were seen as relatively poor, uneducated, backward, Bible-bashing, parochial rural folk with racist tendencies - like one of the US southern states.
The state government was more parochial, right-wing and corrupt than elsewhere.
Since then, they have changed, developed and caught up.
Politics there still is more right-wing, however; the right and far-right political parties are much more popular in Queensland than elsewhere.
Most of Australians do, but what it comes down to is that the life is very different in southern Australia and northern Australia. Most people in southern parts of the country live in big cities with all comfort. Up here in north, we do have cities, but a greater amount of people live in smaller towns and rural areas and we do get our monsoonal rains, tropical cyclones and floods. That does make the life tougher, we have to 4WD arcross flooded rivers to get to the shop during the wet season in remote areas (if we get through at all) - no comfort like in big cities.. but in return we have a great laid-back lifestyle!
Queenslanders are considered more red neck and racist, although not all of them, it's just a stereotype. Just look at the election results, there's a higher amount of votes for Pauline Hanson's party, who's also from QLD.
For many years Queensland was referred to as being the backward State by southerners ..we were considered to be dinosaurs compared to the trendies in Sydney & Melbourne & were subjected to all sorts of ridicule because of our politics ....I guess that sort of toughened us up & made us even more parochial & suspicious of southerners ..
Well they aren't scoffing any more ...for years the Qld economy underpined the basket states of the south & it's only because of the incompetent , dishonest dills we have in government now that we are in the same boat as the rest of the country...
In spite of all this , we are still the go ahead State & Queensland is still attracting thousands of interstate migrants each year ..
Some of the southern states view Qlders as being a bit odd, a bit weird, loopy, head in the clouds types. I personally think its because theyre jealous of the laidback QLD lifestyle.
I dont know if they are more tough? It might be referring to how we are resilient to floods, droughts, cyclones, etc? And also the harshness of qld outback perhaps.

I have heard that Queenslanders are more Christian than the average in Australia, it might be something to do with that.
