I live with my mom and brother and we have 2 dogs. In the morning I walk my dog, Mackie. Occasionally, my brother will join us with his dog but usually not.
I've had my dog Mackie for a little over 2 years. About 4 times in the last 3 or 4 months, when I'm walking him and we are a block or two from the house, regardless of what direction we head in, he has stopped and won't continue on. He just stands there, looking back towards the direction of the house, whether its in view or not. Then 2 or 3 minutes later, here comes my brother with his dog even though when Mackie and I left the house there was no indication that they were going to join us. Often, my brother would be watching TV and his dog was napping or something like that.
How could my dog have known that they were coming?
Update:A couple of times our house was still in view. Then the front door opened and out comes my brother and his dog, so smell wouldn't be part of the scenario. I'm not superstitious but I find this interesting and puzzling.

Maybe because dogs have a superior nose and ears to us humans. Their ears are like sonar dishes. They don't miss a thing in the surrounding kilometer or so.
It is said that dogs can see things that we can't so it is possible, but also 'hales :]" is right the have a strong sense of smell and strong sense of hearing. I love dogs!
Well, if the other dog is already outside, your dog can probably smell him. So he waits to see him.
Yes they do
Yes, and so do cats.
