Do experienced skydivers who frequently jump, like in club, pack their own parachutes? I was under the impression that this task had to be done by a licensed rigger of some sort, but that idea maybe came from something I heard in the military. I'm asking because a woman at work claims to have been a skydiver in the 1980s, having made 80+ jumps, and that she "always packed her own chute." Which may be, but the drama she goes through just tying per shoes today makes the story a little difficult to believe. (She also tells some story about a fellow jumper who's chute failed to open and who hit the ground "between 1,100 and 1,200 mph" which sort of put the rest of us on B.S. alert, since we did happen to know something about terminal velocity.)

They do pack their own chute. I forget the hours required, but you have to go through classes and certifications, I believe, with X amount of jumps. A beginner has to jump tandem with an experienced jumper. But I'd say you're spot on...sounds like she's full of it for sure. Anyone able to pack their own chute with 80+ jumps would not saying something so ignorant as someone falling 11-1200 mph...
Experienced sky divers do pack their own chutes⥠Ive sky dived 3 times but not experienced⥠I haven't taken the class which consists of two days and it was $1000 last year when i asked⥠You do free fall at 120mph⥠I have heard of people surviving but it's rareâ¥
Experienced jumpers DO pack their own 'chutes. I know an Army Ranger whose punishment for an infraction was to have someone ELSE pack his 'chute for a period of time...THAT is a scary thing, because you'd LITERALLY be trusting someone else with your life.
This chick is talking out of her @ss, in my opinion. I'd say you B.S. meter is working just fine....Call her out on it!!
