I'm a firm believer in the idea that a person should pay according to their ability to pay. As a person's income goes up, they can afford to contribute more to the cost of government. As a result, I am in favour of a progressive tax system.
I also believe that as a person's income goes up they are able to pay a higher proportion of their income. Hence, I also support progressive tax rates.
Don't confuse progressive rates with a progressive system. Progressive rates reflect the idea that a person can contribute a greater share of their income as their income rises. A progressive system has people paying more as their income goes up, but not necessarily a greater share of their income.
In truth, the so-called progressive tax system has many regressive features such as sales tax and trust fund shelters for the very rich so that they escape taxes completely.
I think that we should go to a flat tax system but the lawyers and accountants would be unemployed then. In other words, a lot of our tax code has been written to support the middlemen parasites that live off the government.
The size of the government on all levels should be reduced but I don't see that happening very soon, do you? We seem to be drifting to the left and higher and higher taxes with a permanent economic slump.

Progressive, since that is what works.
