My doctor wants to put me on Provera, since I have very irregular periods. I have signs of PCOS(also runs in my family). I know someone who has PCOS and says I shouldnt waste my time on provera. We want to have kids in the future so were starting now with getting help. Just looking to see if I should skip the provera or it if have actually worked for someone with PCOS. Does anyone else know of any other medication that would help me ovulate?

I have PCOS, and I have used Provera to induce a period. It doesn't always help you ovulate, though, especially if you are prone to not ovulating in general. It works for SOME women with PCOS, but each woman has different severity of PCOS.
I would say it is up to you based on how aggressive you want to be. All fertility medications come with side effects and risks. Some people want to start off slower and take it as it comes, and some just want to be pregnant whatever it takes. If you're not in a great hurry (ie you're still young and you're willing to wait and see), I would suggest trying the Provera and seeing what it does for you. But I would rather err on the side of caution than go full-tilt.
Either way, I think your first step would be to find out for sure if you have PCOS or not. Sometimes thyroid issues can cause ovulation issues, so make sure your thyroid is balanced. If your thyroid is borderline, please ask your doctor to try you on a really low dose of medication for a few months to see if that helps the issue. Sometimes it does (it did in my case, but I had thyroid issues due to PCOS).
I wish you luck. Hold onto your hopes and dreams and you will get there. It can be a hard journey (took us three years) but it is worth it. Good luck!
