We were studying fish in my aquatic biology class, so my teacher brought in some $0.14 goldfish to study. When we were done studying them, my teacher let us bring one home. I only have one, but I'm afraid the tank I have isn't big enough for him. He's already over an 1" long, and the only tank I have available for him at the moment is a 1.5 G tank. I know that goldfish produce a lot of waste, but the tank does have a filter. Should I purchase a bigger tank; or wait a little while and see if he actually survives, and then purchase one?

Feeder fish are baby goldfish! (who are taken care of poorly so often times die..) 1.5 gallons isn't suitable for ANY fish. I'd eat cereal in that size bowl! filtering a 1.5 gallon tank isn't the best idea eitehr... I would purchase a 10 gallon tank at least, wait a few months to see if he grows a little and looks healthy(if he doesn't survive a 10 gallon tank is a good starter tank if you want to get into fish keeping, you could get small tropical fish after you upgrade his tank also), but at the end of the day - goldfish need 55 gallons for ONE fish. Goldfish grow 8-10 inches (roughly) fancy goldfish are a bit shorter, but seeing as they're feeder fish- they're your regular goldfish. The reason you should get a 10 gallon for right now, is because they produce more waste than you think! Your fish would EASILY conduct ammonia posioning in that small of a bowl.
certain they make effective pets. although what type of feeders are they? Feeders is a widely used time period for any a lot less intense priced fish used for feeding different animals. Feeders should be ANY fish that the shop has bought for a cheap fee. Even ones others herald to get shop credit for because they don't have the room to shop them. Are they goldfish? Minnows? Betta's? Guppies? Mollies? so some distance as how lengthy they'll stay, that should be counted upon the type of fish. Goldfish no matter if it really is a comet round 20 years a elementary goldfish in extra of 40. Minnows searching on type from 2-20 years, bettas 2 years mollies 3-8. All of those fish will eat flakes, pellets vegetables etc. in the experience that they are goldfish including sparkling vegetables and end result's large atleast two times per week. inspite of the very undeniable truth that many breeders cull out the fish they don't make a call from a run, those are in many circumstances raised as feeders. you are able to in truth get some that are malformed, and in reality not wanted fish. not all are in ill well being, they were in basic terms the unlucky ones.
He is going to grow quiet a lot, they can get to be about 10-12 inches, so a bigger tank is needed. I would suggest nothing under a 30 gallon tank~
when I bought feeder fish the owner told me they will not survive for avery long time, but when I put them in my 29 gallon tank they all survived for a long time. When I knew they grow 1 foot long (12 inches), I put them for adoption at petco. You need to get a tank up to 75 gallons. 1 inch per gallon or the tank will be cloudy. Keep learning more about them and get another goldfish for it won't be alone.
i read somewhere that feeder fish have better genetics than fancy fish. as the fancy fish have been bred so much and so often they can become ill very easily. where as the feeder fish inst bred for looks he wont become ill as quickly, so that little guy has more of a chance. and if not then least he died happy and not been fed to a Oscar or something
Feeder fish have no health guarantee cause they are usually just food for other fish.
1.5 gallons is enough for one goldfish, if he survives and gets big then get a bigger tank if you want.
It's great that you gave him a good home. I'm glad you show concern because that really shows that you care. I would recommend getting him a bigger tank, he would be much happier. Good luck with your new fish!!:)
