if you've never done the job before, don't kid yourself that changing them yourself will save you money.
You'll have to make the investment in tools, and labor, or emergency help when you get stuck halfway through.
A full sized shop with the proper tools, such as a hydraulic lift and air tools can do job much quicker and efficiently than you can in your driveway.
For a pure financial perspective, buy the parts yourself and take it to a brake place to change it. It shouldn't be too expensive (1hour labor/side). Or if you really want to save money, find a friend who has all the tools and expertise and pay them with the traditional case of beer as well as assistant labor.
That being said, if you're just doing it for fun and learning, go for it, but don't do it with the mindset of just the financial reason.
If it has drums...... just pay someone to do it. ha ha. I hate drums. youll need some special brake tools, but it probably doesnt have drums. If its got disks, its cake.
There will most likely be a couple bolts on the back side of the callipers, take out 1 of them, and loosen up the other, so that the calliper can rotate and pull the pads out of the calliper, then push in the piston that squeezes the pads, install the new pads and put it all back together.
If you have to replace the rotors, take the callipers completely off, and then remove the rotors, and then replace the pads. Its always better to remove the rotors and take them to a parts place and have them turned (Shave off the surface metal) and they will also tell you if they need to be replaced, because they will wear down and need to be replaced just like the pads.
you can buy the repair manual at autozone for like 20 dollars
if you have the tools, that book will help for a long time
I start like you doing brakes just by reading the book and I end up rebuilding my engine
good luck
If you do not already know how to do it then you should NOT even try.
The breaks are the most important part of a car.
