I've heard that microwaving a sponge for approximately two minutes can disinfect it quite effectively. Obviously, this doesn't apply if the sponge contains metal. But how do I know if it has metal or not?

Unless the packaging says "steel wool" or "S.O.S. pads", your sponge is not metal. However, microwaving sponges does not kill all germs and bacteria, and your sponge can actually catch on fire. If that happens, you will ruin your microwave.
An easier, safer, and more effective way to disinfect your sponges:
1. Rinse out any food particles.
2 . Squeeze out excess water
3. Squirt a generous amount of dish soap onto the sponge
4. Squeeze again to distribute the soap.
5. Just leave the soap in the sponge -- do not rinse
Dish soap kills germs and bacteria. Your sponge will always smell wonderful....and you won't end up ruining your microwave.
I have never heard of a sponge containing metal. Sponges are either natural sponge, a plant that grows in the ocean, or they are made from cellulose(from wood), or artificial materials like polyester.
