You can very often recover deleted pictures from a camera memory card or USB Memory stick. However, to increase the chances of being able to recover pictures after they have been deleted you must not save any new photos, files or data to it.
When you delete pictures (or any files) from a memory card or USB memory device the data itself isn't deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.
If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren't saved to the memory card in the meantime.
One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software.
One tip is to try a demo version of a commercial product that will scan the memory card for deleted pictures and show you exactly what pictures can be recovered. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted pictures or if it's too late already. I'm sure you may have heard that when you delete a file from a computer, it is never "truly deleted." That statement, however, is only partly true. The files do not get deleted after, only the space that they occupy on the disk get prepared to be written over. When you reformatted the memory card in your Canon camera, it did exactly that, and only prepared your pictures to be written over.
SO, the first thing you have to do after format is to not save any more pictures onto that memory card or you risk writing over the photo video files that you are trying to recover!
Got that far? Now you need to choose the appropriate camera recovery software. There are a tons of different programs but some are better than others. I actually recommend a program called 001 File Recovery because they have an option that is designed for recovering media files from FORMATTED memory cards, not only deleted or corrupted photo video files. You can download this software here:

Lastly, if the program does not recognize your SD Card as a drive when you are plugging the camera directly into the computer, you may need to directly plug your card into a card reader. Make sure that the card reader has the capabilities to handle your memory card though. Many older card readers can only handle cards up to 2GB, so if your card is bigger than that, you need a newer card reader.
I hope that helps, and that you get your deleted photo video files back like I did!
Most likely you will never recover them. Formatting is a bit different than simply deleting them and harder to recover from. Once you started taking more pictures, those new images were written over the old ones. This essentially means they are gone forever. It may be possible to recover some images that were formatted but not overwritten using forensic software, but I have never had anything commercially available work. There is a reason data shredding programs use overwrite to permanently delete data, it can not be recovered.
Have you first tried transferring your photos to your computer using a card reader? If not, then you should try that.
If it works, you should put the card back in the camera and Format it to delete all files from the card.
I wouldn't reformat. you couls loss all your photos for good
I use cardrecovery. (www.cardrecovery.com) I paid 20 bucks for it, but now I think u can get it for free. but it works Great and all of those other freebees on line either crash, are full of bugs or spyware, and/or don't recover all my pics
CardRecovery even finds old pics I've had on there from two three and sometime four shoots back
It's awesome and I was a little hesitant at first to spend them money fut it was worth it and I've used it for almost two years w/out any problems.
I've had excellent luck with PhotoRescue. The demo will tell you exactly what it can recover before you go and pay for it.
