if they cry unconsolabely for more than 3 hours a day, 3 times a week for more than 3 weeks and you cant find a reason for the crying i.e its not acid reflux, not constipation, not gas, not an intollerance to formulas etc - if a doctor has tried all of these and finds no medical reason for the baby to cry they will say it has colic..
basically crying and no-one really knows why - the theory is they find it difficult to transition from being in the womb and coming into the world in the first 3 months or so of life...
and its usually the same time every day and usually in the evenings apparantly..
symptoms are
unconsolable crying form ore than 3 hours a day
your baby may look uncomfortable or appear to be in pain
Babies may lift their head
draw their legs up to their tummy
become red in the face
pass wind
my baby does all these but doc thinks its because of acid reflux - symptoms of colic can be symptoms of alot of other medical conditions which complicates finding out whats wrong with babies its alot of trial and error until you find out whats wrong when babies have these symptoms
They usually cry at a certain time of day and for an extended period of time.
For my son it was 6 pm on the dot. He would scream for hours sometimes, and nothing would sooth him. It was miserable. I am so glad those days are LONG gone.
My great grandmother said that dark green tinged poopy was a definite sign. No doctor/nurse/practitioner has ever told me that but I always heed advice from my great grandmother about babies because she has raised over 20 children. Not to mention, mine has colic and she cries from time to time, has rather loud farts and her poop is tinged green. Hope that helps. Good luck. Rumor has it that colic should fade by 3-4 months.
oh trust me you'd know! they scream til they are red in the face... they tuck their legs up into their stomach and kick out n scream louder... they are just plain miserable... try mylicon.. OR colic soother!

At least three hours of uninterrupted, unexplained crying a day, everyday for at least three weeks.
You would know. I hope your child does NOT have it.
Good Luck.

Here is an article that I read when I thought my son had colic: http://www.medicinenet.com/colic/article.htm

Yes, excessive crying
I think just having tummy pains that keep them up and painful gas. That's how I knew mine had colic.
