I just adopted a 3 month old rotti pup from the SPCA and he is deaf. House training him has been easy but I was wondering if there were any tips for teaching him tricks like sit and stay or not to jump and what not. Being that he cant hear giving him heck for bad behavior verbally doesnt work. I refuse to hit him as he was beaten and abused before we got him. The vet assistant said to buy him a shock collar to use when he has been bad and that just seems totally mean in my opinion. Does anyone have any advice for me out there?? I would greatly appreciate it.

A RELLY GOOD WEBSITE TEACHES HOW TO SIT,WALK,STAND.STAY REALLY GOOD OR EVEN BETTER http://www.petvideo.com/play.cgi?showId=1073 ITS A VDEO
That is a wonderful thing that you did. I would call some local trainers, they should be able to help you. I have trained a couple of deaf dogs through the years and once you find the best way to get their attention the hand signals aren't hard. I wouldn't even think about a shock collar for him.
This can be done with out a shock collar. You need to learn about "clicker training" if you don't already know what it is and then modify it. Instead of a clicker you need to get a small flash light or lazer pointer and flash it when you would normally use the clicker. Of course you will have to use all hand signals as well. For bad behavior you simply go to him and give a quick but gentle correction on his collar and then redirect him to do something better.
it may take a little bit more work than a puppy that is not deaf..but just teach the puppy hand commands for sit, stay, lay, down so forth. when showing him the hand commands make him do the response. Show the sit signal and push down on the puppies lower back to make him sit. show him the stay sign and walk away if he follows take him back and show him signal again and just work with him..he will get the signals and elarn what they mean...also treat inforcement works well and praise just like with puppies who can hear. Good luck and thank you for giving an unwanted puppy a home.
Hand signals work great. Most police dogs are trained to follow hand signals. That is what we use on the dogs in our kennels at school, because even if a dog isn't deaf, it has been proven that they actually learn better with hand signals. Remember dogs don't hear the actual words that you say, they may learn to distinguish the different sounds and understand tone of voice, but they rely more on scent and body posture as forms of communication.
dogs are very observant and can be taught hand signals. I own a rottweiler and I can tell you they are very smart. My dog is not deaf but knows hand signals as well as verbal.main thing is positive reinforcement and start training now. do not ever hit your dog.e collars can work with a breed like a rottweiler use if nothing else works. try looking for a reputable trainer that deals with deaf or hard to train dogs
use sign language just like you would if a person was deaf.
put a sign to different commands it doesnt have to be the same as in sign language but just so he associates that particular sign with the specific type of action. it will take some time and patience but after a while he will pick up on it.
thats great you got him from the spca.btw
and i wouldnt EVER use a shock colar on any of my pets. i think thats a little inhumane. but thats my opinion
Find someone to teach you how to teach him hand commands, do not use a shock collar, very cruel for a deaf puppy.
you need to use hand signals. he will be able to learn and respond to these. There is also a deaf dog web site. cant remember the name though. search deafdogs on google though. and no need for shock collars.
Everyone Just said hand signals so ya that. you can use nudging as scold as a nudge to the back leg or moving the head away to distract him from chewing habits or over dogs if he trys to charge, in over case's i have no idea sorry, hope it works out :)
