bad starter solenoid - you've given an exact description of one going out... you can replace the entire starter easily, or if you're handy, you can just replace the soleniod on the starter
bad batteries and alternators don't tiiick when they are going out, however you might see if you're battery cables are loose as sometimes you will hear a clicking sound if the connection is not good
Clean the cable connections, charge the battery, and/or have it checked out at a place like Auto Zone. They will check the battery and the charging system for free, and sell you what you need to get back on the road. They will install the battery for you, but not an alternator. Make sure the belts are tight, and not slipping, and that nothing is pulling your battery down, such as something left on at night, such as the glove box light, trunk light, or something plugged in like a cell phone charger.
Your battery is probably dead. Did you leave your lights on over night? Get some jumper cables and a friend can jump you off. If it still won't start then it may be your starter (which isn't all that expensive to fix).
step one is always clean battery connections..charge battery if necessary. then have auto zone or other place test starter. they will do it for free...

Without looking at the car, from what you say my first guess would be the starter. If it was the solenoid it would not tick.
Starter - if you are mechanically inclined, you can remove the starter, take it apart, and clean the magnets. Most of the time, this will work -
Otherwise, buy a new one from www.autozone.com since they have the best prices, and swap it out.
Good luck!

If it's not the battery, it's the stater solenoid.
sound like the starter motor or may be alternator.
good luck
