I have just moved into a new apartment that has a six foot wide closet in the middle of one living room wall. The problem is that this wall is the best place for my 7 foot sofa. And I don't want to see the closet behind the sofa.
I was thinking of finding the longest sofa back table I can find to put behind the sofa. And then putting one, possibly even two, rice paper screen(s) on top of the sofa back table. This should cover most, if not all, of the closet right up to near the ceiling. Maybe I'd add a slender vase with some tall vegetation (maybe pussy willow branches) to break the monotony simply. Maybe put an uplight behind the screen to add ambient lighting. Does this sound like a tasteful solution? Any other suggestions?
Not worried about "losing" the closet as I'll use it to store luggage and other things not used frequently.

honestly i feel all of your ideas where great ones. did you think of doing a simulated window? all you'd really have to do is get a nice decorative curtain rod two heavy pannels and sheers or semi-opaque sheers and dress it up as a window. you could even go as far as lighting it with some floresents (witch look more like natural light) and then place your coutch in front of it. or you could bring the focal point as far away from it as possible by using dramatics on the oposite walls and just play it off as an unused window. hope this helps
Take a "tension mount" curtain rod and put curtains on it and cover the entire wall behind the couch. That will hide the closet and it will decrease sound transferrence through that wall too. Ikea and Marburn Curtains have cheap panels for the curtains. The tension rods can be found at any K-Mart, Wal-Mart or Target for only a few bucks.
I used a hand dyed tapestry, ran it through the sewing machine once and hung it up on a curtain rod. Kinda boho hippish, but I love it.
