I have a lot of family in Guadalajara, and wanted to plan a trip for December. I haven't been there in a year, so I was wondering if anyone can tell me their experience if they've been there recently. I realize it's been dangerous for a few years now, and even the times I have gone it's been against my parent's better judgement, (im 21 btw), but recently my mom has told me some stories of people getting kidnapped that weren't involved in drugs and were just targeted because they were foreigners. Although I am a foreigner, I'm half Mexican but, my hair is dyed blonde and I wear colored contacts, but my cousins dress the same way and live there and they go out a lot more than I do. And while I'm careful not to be too flashy, my aunt and mom have traveled there constantly (they are from there but live in the US and always dress flashy), and nothing has ever happened to them. So I don't know if my mom is just worrying too much, or for good reason, because she's always going and only questions safety when I go. I don't go to night clubs or anywhere alone especially not at night, if anything the most dangerous thing I do is take the bus everywhere. But like i said, I have lots of relatives that dress just as flashy or more and they're fine. I'm not gonna put myself in dangerous situations, but anyway. What do u think? Have you been there recently? Would they target me for being American? I really want to go because I haven't seen my family in a year. Any safety advice would be great, thanks.

You said "travel to Guadalajara".
You did not say how you were traveling. If flying it should be no problem at all. If driving, you could encounter problems along the border areas, and then you will also be driving an "American" car. If you fly and rent one, then you will be driving a Mexican car, and that would not attract any attention.
My advice, is go and be safe.
Oh, no!
Specially when you have a family there.
Don't take useless risks, anyway and ask for information well in advance...
Still, always try to travel along with local people in order to feel more secure as a blond foreigner girl.
Guadalajara is much safer than other cities in México, I live in México City but remember that December is a very special month and the end of the year so expect to find a "crowdy" Perla TapatÃa, that means, Guadalajara filled with people out in the streets by then.
My sister went this past december and she was staying in a KINDA dangerous part of guadalajara not really dangerous but not like the safest "barrio" in guadalajara. More like an ugly part of guadalajara and she said she felt really safe being there. She was there for 3 1/2 weeks. She doesn't dress to flashy either.
As a mexican I would tell you that Guadalajara is a little bit boring, absolutely nothing dangerous.
You can take beautiful photos in the main square, walk and that´s it. I would prefer to visit other cities in Jalisco.
