I'm now 23, graduated from school, and back in the house.
He's always been a little mentally Ill but the past week has been pretty bad. He hardly eats, he's smoking again, and he seems to be living off beer. I would feel sorry for him but he's very verbally abusive towards my mother and has always been this way. He's not bad all the time...he just has very bad outbursts.
I've never wanted to do anything with him. He can't even visit the Zoo without breaking down, shoving a pole up his... and acting like 4 year old. I think it's because he needs nicotine and won't smoke around us.
I'm not sure If I should try to interact with him, or just ignore him? I would like to try talking to him, but with the way he treats my mother and handles his problems, I have very little respect for him.

When a person is sick, you should give him treatment and not respect. You give respect to your father or not, you must take him for treatment since he is happened to be your father. You can't make a person seek help for any illness. All you and the family can do is make suggestions. Mental disorders are generally defined by a combination of how a person feels, acts, thinks or perceives. This may be associated with particular regions or functions of the brain or rest of the nervous system, often in a social context. The recognition and understanding of mental health conditions have changed over time and across cultures and there are still variations in definition, assessment and classification, although standard guideline criteria are widely used. In many cases, there appears to be a continuum between mental health and mental illness, making diagnosis complex.Psychiatrists seek to provide a medical diagnosis of individuals by an assessment of symptoms and signs associated with particular types of mental disorder.
