Got my dog neutered three weeks ago, and before he was a great dog... leave him alone all day while at work no problems at all.... well three weeks ago I got him neutered and now he is completely destructive... he has eaten a huge whole in my carpet, torn up the table runner... I don't know what to do.... Did my dog go crazy? Has anybody ever heard of this??

Our dog did the same thing! Our vet never really gave us a real answer, just lots of weird excuses. He got better after about 2 months, but we had to really spent lots of extra time with him giving him lots of attention for a while. I think maybe it is just the adjustment period where their body/brain chemicals are changed. Kind of like when my mom went a little nuts for the 6 months after her hysterectomy! lol
That depends on what sort of breed he is; I also believe that it is a way for dogs to get attention.
Give him lots of love, and be sure to let him get the exercise he needs.
Leave an alarm clock out, or let some music play on a low volume, so he does not feel so alone, and needy for attention.
Consult your vetrinarian also on this.
Good luck with your dog! I miss mine sometimes, and just have had a few family dogs, but never kept them indoors, except for one because it was a small breed.
Good Chew toys are also helpful.
Airedale Terrier. Chewed up & tore up more than I can even remember or list. Stole food, Stole kid's toys, shoes & boots, clothes, towels, etc and tore everything up. Ate a good bit of it too. Surprised she never got an obstruction. Jumped on the kids. Dug huge holes. It was this dog that got me to my first Dog Obedience class 25 yrs ago. I've been training dogs & competing in Obedience since. And training & competing in Agility for 13 yrs now. I learned a lot of things from that awful dog. The need for early basic Obedience training & methods to train. That a dog needs activities to keep it from being bored & destructive. I also learned how essential it is for active dogs to get adequate exercise for them to make good companions.
I assume he is a young dog. I would buy him a nice BIG crate and some Kong toys to keep him occupied while you are not there to watch him. I know people bemoan crates. I also know that dogs can love "their" crate. I rescue Dals - 9 here now - and they all have their own crates. I say "kennel" and they all run to their crates for a cookie. Most even go there to sleep or when they are tired of all of the commotion.
Never use a crate as punishment though. Time out is OK - but make sure they have a toy. A crate is their place - make it fun and it will be your best investment!
Since he has been neutered he probably is having hormones being released. And everything is getting unbalanced all of the sudden on him. I would give it some time which i guess you have for 3 weeks. So maybe you should talk to your vet to see if he knows what is wrong or if maybe he can prescribe some medicine that will help balance out his hormone levels. And then he should be back to normal.
He is not crazy he is probably just under excersised. Let me guess, you dont walk him much?
You should be walking him Every single day for atleast 30-45 minutes. Its important that you wear him out. The chewing is happening because he needs and outlet for all that pent up energy and has foudn that chewing lets him take out his anxieties.
Walk him daily, and its best if you walk him in the morning before you go to work so he will be calm and submissive while you are at work.
It's just a stage. Every dog goes through it, my dog already did and it was insane! While this stage is going on I would focus on crate traing. My dog learned the hard way that you can not bite and tear your way out, and then she pretty much got the idea that destroying was wrong!
I think you need to provide more info, what breed is he, how old he is etc. A dog would not become destructive because he was neutered. I am guessing something else changed in his environment or his life other than being fixed.
Your dog is Bord he needs to go places on walks to the park or take him to the woods and let him run. He needs to get away from his home. You took a big thing away from him when you got him neutered, he is just Bord
Its His Testosterone Levels Dropping and leaving his body. He'll settle down in a few weeks..Until then Give him Lots of Things to Chew on..Get one of those Kong Things and Fill it up with Peanut Butter....He'll Level Back Up..Dont let him get away with his bad behaviour though..If you catch him doing this stuff Fuss at him!!!!!
