My dog is pregnant for the first time, and I can't get her to a vet cause I'm three hours away from a decent vet. What should I prepare for? I live in a place where litters of puppies happen a lot, and they all turn out into good batches. Now I'm hearing some stuff about c-sections?! My dog is pretty healthy compared to other dogs around. (Where I live it's really common for drop offs, it's why there are so many pups) She should be about a month now. I tried my best to keep her away from the other dogs, but it was hard too cause they came at night so I couldn't protect her (I was pretty lucky though, most of the meaner male dogs got put down cause they were to aggressive) D'x people wouldn't even bother getting their missing dogs either >.> she's pretty big now, but her boobs haven't grown in yet. I've been feeding her puppy chow and canned dog food. She gets leftovers too (just meat and veggies). She drinks lots of milk too. There is also a vet an hour away, but aren't really the go to kinda people. Is there anything else I should be doing? Her mother had a good batch with just normal dog food, some leftovers from some game (like wild meat), and milk. Her puppies were perfectly fine! Just like all the other dogs too! (There were about 4 dogs that had good batches without a vet). If a vet is REALLY necessary I will do everything in my power to get her to one ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ or would her mothers diet be perfectly fine? (My dog used to run around a lot but she been staying home a lot lately, since her pregnancy. I'm also saving up so I can buy her a chain, and material to build like a big pen for her and the pups). Sorry this was long, needed to know if what I'm doing so far is good enough, or if I should be doing something more? Any suggestions, or anything. Don't criticize either, I couldn't get her spades cause I got let go from my job, and my mom quit so were living on spare cash. 16 btw, I was saving up for her fixing, but I had more important use for money.

Sorry for your job loss and I am proud of you for being such a concerned owner. You seem to be already doing a great job, I am no qualified expert but own 5 dogs and have been there for 6 litters of puppies. I say keep up the good work and keep it going especially once she has the puppies because that's when she'll really start to lose weight and some health trust me the puppies take a lot out of the mother but don't full on with junky food she needs the right nutrition as well but sounds like your doing fine. I say get your hands on a decent book about this and/or decent advice we have a book at home that we've used through every litter and it's never let us down. As for the puppies, well we have always usually raised them inside until they're a lot bigger then put them into an outdoor pen. but it is still ok to have them outside but you need it well planned like: very well insulated for their warmth but if it is really hot there make sure provide option for cooler needs even as simple as completely wetting a towel with cold tap water and wringing it out and laying it out for them, and be sure the pen is easily accessible to you and that no other stray animals/dogs can get to it. allow an entry and exit way for the mother that the puppies cannot get out of. Even if you plan and set this all perfectly still be sure to constantly check on them, anything could be happening without you knowing, a big risk is the mother sitting/lying on one because it happened here and most of the time the mother doesn't even realise and just puts her full weight down which muffles the puppy's cry and creates a high risk of suffocation which unfortunately did happen once to one of ours, so even if it be for a few seconds just take the time for a head count and check up. And considering the area you live in I would as soon as possible get her fixed (I don't think you can during pregnancy though and get a professional opinion before you do) because like I said the puppies take out a lot of weight and health and if she ends up pregnant again before she has the time to fully recover her health/weight then it can lead to many health problems and wouldn't be good for your dog to try and go through. Sorry this was so long but I care so much for animals and wish you and your dog and your mum and the puppies all the best.
Pregnancy last about 64 days for dogs. The only clue a laborig mother gives -
May not eat that morning
May drop one to two degrees boddy temp
May see her digging around in a place she usually does not about. 1 to 4 days before birth (nesting instict,"putting together the crib" so to speak, a place to birth the pups)
May se her posturing her back or actively pushing a few hours before delivery.
C sections happen mostly for dogs with big heads. Bull dogs mostly, some pugs, or tiny dogs that were mated with larger. Older dogs may also need one as they are some times not able to get the pup pushed out of the birth canal. The majority of dogs out there give birth naturally and don't need a c section. C sections happen only if a pupy is stuck for what ever reason or if they already know the pups will get stuck because it is a big headed breed.
How do you know if the. Dog is in trouble? Most dogs have their pups in a matter of 2 to 4 hours total. It is not an all day thing like humans.
How do I help. The big help is to bring her inside to a small room with no carpet. Prrovide a birthing box and rags. Use a baby gate inthe door. Leave her alone but check on her by just observing from outside the door. Check on her atleast once per half our. Most dogs will not have their pups with a person hovering around. You leave them be and balance that with making sure they are not in trouble. If you think there is anything odd or even just concerned then yes enter the room and take a closer look.
What should I exspect? A mess. The pups are born in sacks. There is an after birth too that stains stuff. The mother will tear the sack away and chew the cord. No they will NOT bleed out if you let the mother be the one to cut the cord. So when you think she just pushed one out go peek and make sure she is doing what she needs to. If not take of the sack. Use a pieice of floss for the cord tie. Cut off excess string/floss and cut the cord your self a sharp siccors. Let her try again on the next pup.. have more clean rags ready for when the birthing is over. Throw the dirty ones into the trash or the washer.
There is sometimes a runt that will die one to 3 days later. Sad, but don't think things like "if I had of........"
There is not much you could do. Some runts have internal congenital deformity of different organs. So nothing to do about that.
They walk around 4 wks, eyes open around 2wks
Make sure they get their parvo and distemper shots at 6 , 9 , and 13 wks.
Run a stool sample (fresh and stinky) to the vet from the. Pups at 3 wk. And ask them to do a fecal. This is to check for worms passed by mom. The vet will advise you depending on what kind of worm it is. Not all dewormers kill all types of worms. He will probably give you something. For the worms if you bring the mother with you or if she has been there before.
Note. You don't have to see worms for there to be an infection. 99 percent of the time owner will only see the "tape" kind of worm in stool. Stay stay in the dogs intestine where they live. No need for them to come out of the intestine on their own accord - they only come out if you deworm and they are dead. Then you may see round type of worms. You willl never see the hook kind of worm, too small.
Good luck to you both
spay the dog
"I tried my best to keep her away from the other dogs, but it was hard too cause they came at night so I couldn't protect her (I was pretty lucky though, most of the meaner male dogs got put down cause they were to aggressive"
You clealry didn't try at all since you keep the dog outside and allowed it to breed. And you fed the poor dog a horrible diet of cheap food full of fillers, cooked meta which is bad for them, veggies which they can't digest and get nothing from and milk which makes them very sick
"There is also a vet an hour away, but aren't really the go to kinda people. "
So you refuse to take the dog to a vet and clearly dont care about it since you keep it horrible, bred it and feed it a horrible diet and refuse to take it to a vet
"Her puppies were perfectly fine! Just like all the other dogs too! "
So you are a BYBer and proud of it. That is nothing at all to be proud of. Its really not. You bred your mongrel dogs and refuse to vet them. And you make it clear you not only keep it outside you allow the dog to roam every where and want to build a pen to keep it in. Why do you have a dog?
" Don't criticize either, I couldn't get her spades cause I got let go from my job, and my mom quit so were living on spare cash. 16 btw, I was saving up for her fixing, but I had more important use for money."
Then surrender the dog. You are just another BYBer who clearly cares nothing for the dog and refuses to vet it and thinks other things are far more important then spaying the dog or paying for its vet care. You let it roam, have bred other dogs, wont take it to a vet, keep it outside and can't afford its vet care
You didn't care enough to spay the dog becouse expesnive luxury items are more important to you then a living breathing being. Surrender the poor dog and don' get any more pets
Do NOT give any cow's milk to dogs. They cannot digest it & it often causes diarrhea; too species different from canine milk. At 5 weeks she needs to be switched OVER to puppy food, rather than adult dog food (more calories & nutrition). Your local shelters do low-cost spays, btw. She will come in heat about the time the puppies are 7-8 weeks of age, & it could be deadly if she gets re-bred on top on her last litter with no recovery period. BTW, she can be BRED thru a fence. Toy dogs, and those dogs bred by something much LARGER than they are (generally HAVE to have Cesarean sections) & those with uterine interia often need c-sections (which are $2,000). A gravid spay done NOW, by your vet would be cheaper (than a litter) safer, & won't bring yet more unwanted dogs in to further over populate the world when millions are put to DEATH each year for lack of enough homes.
Breeding a litter is not something you should be doing "flying by the seat of your pants", if you love your dog & want her to survive this & refuse the gravid spay option. GO to the library for books or look online for information on whelping & raising puppies.
Congrats!!:) lol just give her a nice bed with some old blankets and you maybe want to use a box with sides about a foot tall so when they are born they can't escape. You also might want to cut one side out so she can get in and out. What you are feeding her is not good, it's puppy chow, think about it. You need to get her some regular food. And give her 24/7 access to it because she will need all the nutrients she can get. And when she is ready to go into labor ( probably during the night) she will go to her bed and if it is during he day and you are home just leave her alone she will know what to do. Remember it is in her instincts to do this stuff. So ya I think that about covers it. She shouldn't need to go to the vet. You might want to take the puppies to get shots though.
Good luck!!
You left an unspayed female outside while in season knowing the area is full of strays, so yes, she got pregnant. Just take her to the vet for a gravid spay. Its cheaper than a litter of pups and building a pen.
Her diet is fine, is she doesn't grow proper teats then you have to give the puppies a baby's bottle filled with warm milk, you just need warm blankets for your dog to rest on and pet her belly to comfort her if she's panicking during birthing. Mothers will do most of the work.
Hope I helped!
You need to get her to a vet how does she get her shots and vet treatment ?
She needs an emergency spay
problematic situation look on with a search engine that will could help
wow! it's a good news.
