I think it is good to have a serious name as first name that you can be called by your teachers and employers and so on and a cute childish nick name that you are called by your parents or friends when you are young, after wards an adult and nice sounding nick name that you are called by your parents and friends when you are adult.
Some people say, it is better to name a child what you plan to call it.
What do you think?

I agree. I like the nickname Maddie but I would use Madeleine as the full name because it's classy and would suit a woman when she's older too. Whenever I think of a new name I like I try to picture it on a baby, a child, a teenager, an adult and an old person to make sure it will grow with them throughout their life. For example, the name Layla is cute but I can't picture it on a woman. I like Lila which I think would age better but I'm still catious about it. There are some names however, for example, Kylie, that sound like a nickname even though they are proper names and aren't a nickname for anything so I think those are fine. :]
There is nothing wrong with giving your child a nick name. I do think its strange when I meet someone with a name that sounds like its meant for a toddler. For example, Lilly. Its a cute nickname but to be named Lilly as a 35 year old seems odd to me. I would suggest Lillian and call her Lilly for short or Kenny for a boy should be Kenneth that way his name can grow with him. I cant imagine having a boss with a legal name of Lilly or Kenny. Just seems odd. Lucky for you there are tons of professional and nice names that have cute nicknames for them as babies
I think it depends on the name. There are some nicknames that I think are fine as full names and others that are not. I know of a women who would be in her 100s who has the full name Lilly. I do not see anything with a name like that used as a full name. I am not a big fan of stiff ultra-formal names that remind me more of a bygone era than modern times. I think Lilly is more fit for modern times than Lillian.
I agree with you. There's a time in your life your life where a "cute/fun" nickname is more appropriate than a "professial" full first name.
Young age and close family should use the nickname
And professial situations should have a full first name.
My name is Katherine and like you said as a child i was called Katie-Cat by all my family, and my father still calls me it despite the fact i'm 30! my husband, friends etc all call me Kate but in my job and other professional areas i'm called Katherine which i like because it gives me a clear definition between the two.
I think its better to have a serious, respectable name than a nickname as a full name.
Evangeline= Evie. I love Evie, but Evangeline is much more professional.
:) hope this helps :)
