I am certified by ABC to be a dog trainer. I payed for my own schooling and I inquired about a job at Petco. They want me to sign a contract for 1yr. If I break the contract I owe $5000. Should I sign it? I'm thinking no.

No chance...This is a one way street you do not want to be on! If they want that deal, I am betting the market is pretty good where you are!
Why not ask them for a $20,000 severance agreement, which they would not ever want to sign.
I would also bet that the contract has a non compete clause! See an attorney since they have had theirs draw up these one-way BS contracts.
petco and petsmart go through employees like water, and have the $$ to fight you should it not work out to their satisfaction! Ever fight a large corporation legally?
I have heard that they have contracts stating the length of time you must remain at the job. I know someone who was a groomer there & they had to sign a contract stating they had to remain in that job for a year. I'm not certain if there is a fine or if this applies to trainers as well. My guess is that if one of the managers told you this, it's probably the case. Whether or not they are the store manager they should have knowledge of the store policies.
no.
and while you're at it, find a different school to learn your dog training from
ABC tends to teach that dogs don't need correction (as I have seen with every ABC certified trainer)
and that is far from the truth. all dogs need corrections
that is an immensely personal decision, and no one on here can make it for you or even suggest an answer, since the variables are far too many, and way to personal for us to even have a clue.
up to you and job market
Oh hell no
