an airplane flies due west at 185km.h with respect to the air. there is a wind blowing at 85km/h to the northeast relative to the ground. what is the plane's speed and direction with respect to the ground?
I tried to look at an example but I think im doing it wrong. If you could explain it with work that would be awesome.
Thanks,
Jacob

Basically draw a triangle with the two arrows for direction, one going to the west and another going to the northeast, and the hypotenuse (resultant vector) will be the total speed. To find the direction you must use sin or cosine.
So for the speed you get 203.59km/h and for the direction (sin windspeed=85/203) you get 24 degrees.
