I recently signed up with TD Ameritrade to begin a Roth IRA. I started with just $500 as I do not have much to start with. I am a college student and just 22 years old.
I want to start with an investment in an index fund, however I noticed that many of the minimums are much higher than $500. Some at 3000 (vanguard). Does anyone have an suggestions on a specific fund to begin with?

Keep investing in the Roth IRA. They hold an index fund already. When you've fully contributed to it, then look into mutual funds because most index funds want 2-3,000 dollars to start with.
Check and see if you can get into Vanguard STAR. I think it has a $1000 minimum and is a balanced fund of funds.
better buy quality company with discounted stocks. I prefer COca cola, Johnson and Johnson and Proctor and Gamble.
