Look. the Thalmor are going to send a "hit" squad after you at some stage anyway, don't worry about them, kill them take thier robes and profit from this quest. They are unimportant, just a "red herring", take them on, it adds to the fun. Whichever side you are on ,Imperial or Stormcloak, nearly everybody hates them.
Sadly, men are far too often affected by this tragedy. It's a shame that we have created a culture in which men have to be so "strong" that they are often ashamed to admit that they are being hurt by a woman. It's much more socially acceptable for a woman to admit to being hurt by a man. This absolutely needs to change so that men are able to seek the help they deserve. I would imagine that this would happen by an increased presence of groups (and literature) designed to help men overcome domestic violence. There are also fewer shelters and emergency support services for men who are domestic violence victims, particularly when they are seeking a shelter that will allow them to take their children. There are male and co-ed shelters, but finding shelters specifically for men with children is quite a challenge. Yes, the average man can throw a stronger punch than the average woman, but that doesn't mean that men cannot be physically hurt (quite badly) by women. It also says nothing of the fact that both men and women can verbally and mentally abuse each other without having to have any physical strength. This is all complicated by the fact that men often find themselves the victims of male partners, and with so many still ridiculing the LGBT community, seeking help becomes even more difficult for those men who are living in abusive relationships. Finally, I do not view "yelling and screaming at your partner" as a sign of a strong, independent woman. That's bullshit, and I'd be surprised to find many who think that this behavior is the sign of a strong woman.
Yes there is, you need to talk to General Tulius at the Imperial Leigon headquarters (solitude, I think) and there is an option to persuade him to release the dude. Although when I tried it, my speech wasn't high enough to successfully persuade him...

Skyrim: Is there a way to release Thorald from Thalmor custody in Northwatch Keep without violence or magic?
