Are you referring to the tram network around Croydon? The answer will differ depending on where specifically the start & end points are.
So for instance, the journey from Croydon to Mitcham Junction is quicker by tram than by train (the train route would require changing at either Balham, Streatham or Sutton). But from Croydon to Wimbledon is actually quicker by train, changing at Clapham Junction, than by tram.
Trams go upto 80 kph between Lloyd Park and Sandilands. (There was a poster on the tram doors about 1-2 years ago with some random facts about the tram network. This was stated there)
Suburban Trains can only reach about 75kph before they have to stop at a station.

In the U.K. the maximum speed of trams is between 30 and 40 m.p.h. and they rarely reach that maximum
Trains travel up to 125 m.p.h. or 140 m.p.h. on the high speed line from London St Pancras to various parts of Kent
To go where? Trains are faster than trams.
