I make a point to watch an anime or movie in it's original language, but if it's on American TV I don't snub the dubs. (ha ha rhyme!) If you watch something in it's intended language you can pick up on the nuances of expression that are missed in the dubs. Personally I think that Japanese, and some Romance languages, are more expressive than English. The only way I can describe it...would be to compare the female voices, and especially the men while in an anguished scene...they're less inhibited than an English stiff upper lip. I first watched My Neighbor Totoro in English and thought it was beautiful, but when I saw it a second time in Japanese I sobbed through the whole thing. Maybe that's the thing you don't like about Japanese voices. I wonder is the almost whiny sound of the Japanese females gets on your nerves? Watch a few minutes of a cute female in Spanish and see if you have the same reaction. I know that subs can go across the screen very fast, and there are some people who don't have a choice but to watch the subs.
