I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Here in NS a "Class 3" license allows you to drive a vehicle over 30,000 pounds (14,000 kg).
I was wondering what the equivalent license is called in the US, if there is such a thing.
Or maybe they have different names in different states...?

Here in the U.S,. any vehicle weighing over 26,000 lbs needs to be driven by a holder of a CDL
CDL means Commercial Driver's License.
Class A CDL is for tractor trailers. Class B is for straight trucks that weigh 26,000 pounds or more. Class C is for any vehicle weighing more than 26,000 pounds which does not meet the classifications for A or B.
Also, if a straight truck is pulling a trailer, like a utility trailer, or a construction equipment trailer that weighs over 10,000 pounds, you will need a class A CDL.
Besides the class of vehicle, there are certain additional endorsements you can get, such as TANKER, DOUBLES/TRIPLES, HAZMAT, or PASSENGER.
If you hold a class A CDL, but have no TANKER endorsement, you can not drive a liquid tanker truck, even though the size of the truck is covered by the CDL class. Even if it is empty, a tanker is still a tanker.
HazMat stands for Hazardous Materials, which is required to haul any load that requires to have warning placards on the truck.
There are a few finer details, but this will give you a good idea of what you wanted to know
