Was he the bad guy in the situation? I'm doing a report on him but I can't seem to absorb the concept here of who was the bad guy that people disliked and who's side people were actually on.
Most people thought he was a bit touched. He was the third (?) prophet of a Christian religion that broke away from the 7th Day Adventists in the early 1900s and is one of three known as Millerite (for the first prophet of each). He was the bad guy because the Clinton administration needed to sway the public to prevent a scandal. He was married to and had sex with a young girl and one of his edicts was that he was married to every woman in the religion. That at least makes him a law breaker so he was a good target. The religion was targeted because of their main income source which was taking standard semi-automatic rifles and making them look cool then reselling them. All legit but it conflicted with the Clinton scheme of calling normal rifles (semi-automatic) as "assault rifles" and banning them. They were originally targeted as a way of the BATFE making big headlines so as to get more funding from Congress. They botched it badly so the FBI was called in to "professionalize" (in this case, that meant covering up) the operation. Several federal agents were killed after Koresh came to the door and tried to talk with them and they opened fire, wounding his father-in-law. That started the siege as the congregation was now thoroughly convinced that this was the end for them (there was an undercover agent within the congregation) so resisted further assaults resulting in the death of four agents or so. Eventually, poison gas (banned internationally for war use but legal for domestic use in open air, ie, not confined spaces like the church) was pumped in and a fire started burning down the church. Koresh was the bad guy because he was the leader of them and they were made into "cult" members by the government. He was a bad guy but nowhere near the degree he was made out to be. They did, afterall fully cooperate with the state of Texas when similar state firearm charges were levied to the point of turning over all of their weapons (which were returned when the Texas Rangers cleared them of any wrong doing of gun laws).
He was a bad leader in the way he ran his cult. He claimed to be Jesus Christ and he had sex with the married women in his cult. The other men could only have sex with thier wife but had to share with David. There was also rumors that he was doing the children too.
When the FBI showed up he didnt let the cult members including the children leave. He put them in the basement instead of sending them out as the FBI ordered. So I think that would make him a bad guy.
