My father is an alcoholic and i know that that kind of things can be hereditary. I have told myself that i will never take a sip of alcohol in my life because im so afraid that i will turn out like him. anyway, i was just wondering if you believe that alcoholism is a disease or if you believe it is a choice. you are entitled to your opinion, but please no rude comments. on either end!!
Update:just as another thing. could you say when you answer if you have an alcoholic parent, sibling, etc.

Personally, I don't believe alcoholism is a disease. With diseases like Cancer or Diabetes you don't get a choice. You have a choice to pick up a bottle.
Disease by nature is a progressive problem within your body. Most of the people answering your question don't realize that anything going wrong can be considered a disease by definition if it continues.
Alcoholism is when you reach a point where you don't drink willingly ~ you do so unwillingly.
Certain factors contribute to alcoholism, and it has been proven that if your parents are alcoholic that you can quite easily become alcoholic. Its a psychological yet physiological thing. Your parent's drinking affects your psychology in a way that your brain/brain chemicals are slightly different. That difference makes it easier for you to become an alcoholic.
Alcoholism would be the disease.
I strongly believe it is a choice. Having said that, I will say that there are tendencies which are inherited which lead alcohol to have differing effects on different people. There may be a family predisposition to alcoholism. Some people should never take the first drink....they may very easily lose control. I have a number of alcoholics in my family, therefore, I rarely take a drink. When I do have one, I notice the tendency for me to drink it rapidly and for me to immediately want another. I fight that, so I usually don't drink, but have soda water or soft drinks.
YES!! it is very much a disease, a disease of the mind. it can control you. I learned that when I was at an alcohol treatment center for my addiction to alcohol. it is not something to take lightly it is a bad disease, but the good thing is, it is curable!
lol i have lyrics from Rhianna's disterbia song. lol wasn't done on purpose.
Stan's dad in south park thought/thinks it is. But seriously no, a disease is similar to a virus that has crippling power. Alcohol is not a virus but a pest and a mental state of mind and self control.
An alcoholic doesn't have to drink to be an alcoholic.
Having a sip won't turn you into one - you are either already one (if you really believe it's hereditary), or you're not.
I think that it is some ones choice to start. But once it gets going, then its a disease. Its kinda like herpes. Its your dicison whether you have sex, but once you have herpes its a disease.
no being prone to addiction is a disease. you might become addicted to something else . . . like posting on this website.
