Use tooth paste that is made for dogs only!!! You can find it at the pet store... it comes in flavors they enjoy like chicken and beef. Sounds gross, but it works for them :] Start gradually with it. Make it a positive thing. Offer some of the doggie tooth paste on your finger as a treat so that he/she knows it is nothing to be afraid of or be weird about. Once they approve of the substance - try working with the tooth brush (which you can also find at the pet store). Put it in his/her mouth, rub a tooth, give a reward - repeat. Practice this every other day or so, until they get the hang of it and feel comfortable. If done properly, over time, they should let you get in there, no problem :] Talk to your vet for more info if you are still unsure!! Hope this helps...
I just want start by saying, please do not use human toothpaste.
For those who don't know, human tooth paste is not suppose to be swallowed and is toxic to dogs.
I tried to brush my dogs teeth, however they didn't enjoy it much. Brands to use, any one from a pet store or your vet is fine. You don't have to use tooth paste just water is fine...yes the tooth paste is designed to remove plaque, but not all dogs enjoy the tastes of them.
There are different "tool" you can use to brush their teeth, you can buy doggy tooth brushes or baby tooth brushes. You can also get finger brushes, or gloves with brushes on them, or you can use gauze (however that becomes expensive). How, the same way you'd brush your own teeth without the mouth wash and floss.
There are kibbles available (science diet makes one) that brush your dogs teeth while they eat it. I use these as treats b/c the quailty of the food isn't great.
You can also get a liquid that you put in their water that removes plaque. I use this one as well.. but only a few times a week..I alternate with the kibble.
I use a rubber thumb toothbrush, and I also use cheese flavoured (it was the only flavour they had) toothpaste called Dentipet.
I brush my dogs teeth every day, twice if I have the time.
I just hold their lip up and gently brush the teeth, cleaning their teeth as I would my own except in a shorter time and more gently.
Try and give your dog a break every 10 seconds or so to get him used to the idea. Or give him a break every time he begins to become agitated, then commence once he's had a pat and a relax.
As someone else has said bones are really good for helping to clean your dogs teeth. Especially raw meaty bones, they act basically just as natures toothbrush.
It would be best to only give them bones occasionally like once a week.
I'm currently giving my dogs raw chicken frames with heaps of meat left on them to act as an alternative for cleaning their teeth as I'm verging the last week of my studies.
Yes I brush my dogs teeth, I use Nylabone PET Toothpaste TARTAR CONTROL, I brush my dogs teeth at least twice daily, my favorite brand is Nylabone. Like us, it’s ideal to brush your dog's teeth at least twice daily. Try to brush for approximately 30 seconds per side. (Brush in a straight path is the most efficient) Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the toothbrush. Gently raise your dog's lips on one side. You can either do this by pushing up on the lip with the index finger of your free hand or by placing your free hand over your dog's head with your thumb and index finger on opposite sides of your dog's upper jaw to lift his lips. To brush the lower teeth, you will need to open your dog's mouth a little. This can be done by gently tilting your dog's head backward while holding onto his or her upper jaw with the thumb and index finger of your free hand.
I try to brush my puppies teeth every other day you can go to the pet-store and buy puppy toothpaste the employees should be able to help pick a brand and for the toothbrush you can use a child toothbrush
No, I just buy some dog treats/bones that are supposed to keep their teeth clean, for the most part my dogs breath smells good and hes never had any problems, i did it with my last dog and he was fine :)
use dog toothpaste and little toothbrushes that you can slip over one finger.
i found it too much hassle to brush my dogs' teeth everyday so i now don't. i feed them raw chicken backs or chicken necks depending on their size and their teeth are pearly white. cleaner than those teeth brushing days.

RE:
Do you brush your dogs teeth? ?
What do you use and how often? I need to start brushing my puppy's teeth. Would love some suggestions as far as brands, how to, etc.
I purchased some beef flavored paste and a brush from my vet. My dog loves having her teeth brushed.

I don't brush my dogs teeth. But he gets them cleaned at the vet, and I give him dental bones.
