Yeah, teenage males can have anorexia nervosa just like women. Sometimes it manifests as something nick-named manorexia. As males we now see the same unattainable bodies in the magazines and on-line that women have had to deal with forever. Sometimes we compare ourselves to these perfect air-brushed models and come up short.
Add to that our general concern about being overweight. Most of us watch our weight or want to lose some pounds. Sometimes that can go too far. When loosing weight involves unhealthy practices (purging, extreme calorie restricting, etc.) it can become anorexia. And we men are not immune.
Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that primarily affects adolescent girls and young adult females, and is considered to be rare among males. It is estimated that 1 in 200 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18, the high risk group, develop anorexia nervosa and 90% of those affected are females (NIMH, 1987). There has been a steady increase in the reported incidence of male anorectics, from approximately 5% in 1985 (DSM III) to as much as 10% in 2005
Yes, although it affects women more than males that doesn't make males immune to eating disorders. Congrats, on gaining your weight back and yes you can have a relapse it is a disease and you should seek support or counseling because this not something you want to fight alone.
