I'm 18 years old and somehow have been stricken with quite literally the most painful medical condition I have ever experienced in my life, despite it being notorious as an "old man's disease". All symptoms started shortly after having unprotected sex with an ex-girlfriend (who assured me she was a virgin) about 6 months ago. Ever since then i have been on waves of antibiotics, with varying degrees of success. The best reaction I have gotten is from doxycycline. The symptoms are ALMOST completely gone when I'm on it. But doctors I see keep prescribing it for 10 day periods, and it always comes back as soon as I get off of it. Recently, I have been put on a 30 day prescription for it. I've been on it for about two weeks, and once again am experiencing a drastic improvement in symptoms. However, i still continue to experience minor flare ups. I'm scared that even after 30 days, I'll still have a relapse of symptoms once I come off it. Am I stuck with this for the rest of my life? Will a 30 day trial be enough to eradicate it?

Instead of doxycycline, if it has failed in the past, I would ask for a 4 week course of ofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, or an IV course of Ampicillin with gentamycin based on body weight. I would also insist on further screening for other possible causes of your symptoms (which should always be done if a treatment regimen for an infection is unsuccessful).
Perhaps it's time for the IV course of treatment in your case. It can be challenging to endure for a month, but it may end up getting rid of the chronic bacterial prostatitis (if that is what you have).
Some people unfortunately have a hard time getting rid of this problem, and we are still learning about the different causes of prostatitis.
