Does nail polish remover cause cancer?
OK so my cousin said that in nail polish remover, they're the same chemicals used in cigarettes which therefore, nail polish remover can give you cancer. I mean, lots of girls paint their nails so if they made something like that to hurt them...well I don't think so. Even young toddler girls paint their nails so I know they wouldn't. Yet, I know that the chemicals in cigarettes are harmful...but is my cousin right? I really don't think so :/

There's a chemical in both nail polish remover and cigarettes called Acetone. This chemical is recognized as a carcinogenic when inhaled, but you're far more likely to get cancer from it if smoking cigarettes than using nail polish. This is because you inhale it when smoking cigarettes, and when using nail polish remover you don't necessarily inhale it. When using nail polish remover you can take the following precautions just to be safe:
1. Open a window
2. Don't use it for too long
3. Use a fan
Very few people have gotten cancer from nail polish, so you'll probably be fine.
Not unless you put it right up to your nose and snort the fumes. The truth is most of these polishes and removers now have been made perfectly safe so you can feel free to polish and remove all you want and still not have any ill effects on your health. That's just one reason they came out with acetate free remover. Please don't ever intentionally sniff these though. I'm not too sure why anyone would actually do that, but nothing can be obtained by doing it. Some people thought long ago that it might be a cheap way to find to get high like glue sniffers. Your cousin is over-reacting. Some nail-polishes have chemicals that can make the risk of getting cancer higher, but only by a tiny amount that will do no harm at all.
And people who smoke do not always develop cancer so think about the chances of getting it from nail polish.
