We just brought a puppy home from a shelter, he's about 5 months old- a goldendoodle. He ate one bite of food last night and one bite of food this morning, he's drinking fine, but all he does is sleep and his nose is really hot, does he have a fever?

You can take hie temp with a rectal thermometer. Normal is between 101- 102. He may just be a bit nervous because of the change!!! Any time anyone gets a new pet they should be checked out by a vet within a few days!!! Congratulations on your new addition to the family!!!
Taking his temperature (rectal is best) is the surest way to figure out if he has a fever. A hot, dry nose can be an indication of a fever, as can pale gums, heat radiating off the chest or belly, lethargy, minor coordination problems, glossy eyes, acting a little dazed and so on -- basically, all of the typical fever symptoms. It's impossible to be certain without taking his temperature, however. Normal rectal temp for dogs is between 99 and 102 degrees (F), with the average being 101. It's a good idea to take your dog's temp when he's healthy, just to get an idea of what is normal for him. Like humans, a dog's temperature varies a little bit (no more than a degree or so) depending on a number of factors (air temperature, humidity, physical activity, stress, etc.), and can vary from dog to dog. The dry nose can also be caused by dehydration, overheating, non-infectious diseases and even stress. Make sure you give him plenty of water to drink and keep him cool (I usually keep my dog cool in the summer by setting up a fan in the living room, he always loves lying in the breeze it creates).
Just because your dog nose is dry doesn't always mean it has a fever. When dogs are sleeping their nose are dry. If you are worried, take him to a vet. When you got the dog did they give you a health paper that gives you one visit to a vet for a check-up ? They should of, our does in South Dakota. If they did, it should give you a few days to take it to the vets. I'd use it ,that way you know if your dog is sick or not.. You can also take the dogs temp in it's rectum use a jell. Then you will know if the dog is running a temp or not, it should be 101 or 102 it's been so long I have forgotten.
A dry/ hot nose can, but doesn't necessarily, indicate a fever; dogs' noses get hot when they are inactive. But in conjunction with his lack of appetite and his sleepiness, it's a worrisome sign. Usually puppies love to eat and play. Take him to the vet first thing Monday morning--it's a good idea anyhow, since dogs can pick up all sorts of stuff in shelters.
I hope he's OK! Katharine Maus
Is the nose dry and hot or crusty and hot? The place you can check for a fever in the area of the stomach between the hind legs. But if you are worried take the dog to the vets.
The only way to tell if your dog has a fever is to take his temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is 100.5-102.5 so they always feel warm to us. The hot nose thing is a persistent old wives tale. It is normal for a dog in new surroundings to not eat as much as he usually does for a day or two.But if he acts sick or doesn't start eating better he needs to see a vet.
Taking his Temp is the only way to know if he has a fever. If it over 103 (I think) then he has a fever.Give him a cool/Luke warm bath and keep him hydrated. He may not eat because he is in a new home or because the food is different and he's not used to it.Give him time as long as his temp is normal and he's drinking.
He might. If hes not acting usual he might just not be comfertable yet. Dont worry. If he starts throwing up or sneezing or coughing or barking weird, take him to the vet and ask them whats going on. my puppy used do do that to but he just was mommy sick!
He might be depressed But I would take this puppy to the vet... just to be safe. in the mean time try to keep him comfortable and make sure he gets plenty of fluids and try to get him to eat...
I would go to your local vet and see if it is a fever...(I think it is) but you should get an excspert...
