It's basically a matter of opinion... I heard a group of girls in my school the other day talking (they were too loud to ignore!!!) and one of them said "Yeah, I'm emo, my friends aren't but I am." And maybe I should just mind my own damn business, but It just made me wonder if emo is something you determine yourself to be or just a name that people go around calling you. So... your opinion?
and what EXACTLY makes somebody 'emo'? I've heard lots of things about emo meaning people that cut themselves, and also people getting reaaally angry at the people that say those things. I've also heard it's short for emotional... anyway please clarify? Thanks! :3

The term "Emo" is used as counterculture; it is an abreviation of the word "emotional". Emo it's defining not only an attitude, but also a fashion that are coming from emocore (emo music). Emocore is a combination between hardcore and punk music which was very popular in Washington DC in the late 80's. The emo culture continued to develop between '90 and '00, reaching the height of its popularity today.
I'm a 20 year old guy. I remember in high school when emo was a thing. Emo is just a subculture. Emo is short for emotive-rock which is what punk music was called at the end of it's era in the 80's. The music often expressed a longing, anger, sadness, etc. Now, 15 years after the genre died, the term has come to describe a subculture of (mostly) kids who listen to contemporary screamo music, wear skinny jeans, striped tees, neon colors (all black is also common), make-up (especially eye liner). Emo kids are portrayed as quiet, non-social, androgynous, and more likely than not depressed, too.
What is emo then? It's a fashion, a vague reference to music, and something to occupy kids who in my experience are either seeking attention or just find the whole thing to be fun. It's a kid's thing really. Though, when you get older, there will be 'groups' like emo that people belong to, namely hipsters. From a sociological perspective, these scenes created by emo's and hipsters can be described as miniature social systems that allow the participant to escape the social system offered by society.
Teenagers never know what they're talking about.
Emo stands for Emotional Hardcore, which sounds like shït. But some teens took the name EMO to label themselves back in 2006, when this emo rush started.
It was a group of rich teens who were tired of listening to Slipknot, some idiot came along and wanted to mix rock and roll with emotional stuff... it turned to be a bunch of idiots screaming with their high pitched voices on the microphone, that was just plain horrible, but that was only my oppinion. Most people of my age at that time (15/16) seemed to like it. People started liking everything that was "bad", liked to pretend they were depressed, they had mental issues and that is why they cutt themselves.
I don't really know why a person would want to be emo nowadays since that has already evolved to Indie (people who pretend they know all the underground bands even if they hate their sound), evolved then to scene kids and so and on.
It's all bullshït anyway.
EMO was BIG in like 2004-2008 it's just a way of labeling a person like Jock, prep, stoner, nerd.
EMO is more PG than Goth. When being EMO was cool the people dressed like the 80's with a wannabe punk flip. EMO people liked to be EMO when it was "cool" because they felt like they were "deeper" than others. Not all EMO ppl cut themselves though, but they do like the debbie downer kind of stuff that makes a glass half empty. It's there thing.
Sounds like that girl was just seeking attention and trying to get her existance validating which is why she was talking like that.
EMO was a style/genre of music that came out over 10 years ago.over time with the help of places like hop topics it has giving teenagers who would other wise not fit in with the jock/popular kids a better identity in school than just a nerd/nobody.The funny thing is that the Emo/scene kids are a lot more conforming and critical about the clothes and music other emo/scene kids wear which has went away from the true meaning of punk/goth/alternative scene that emo/scene spawned from
I love that answer, soulman.
Emo is not only an excuse for a lifestyle, but also one of those attitudes that are fake. Emo is supposed to mean emotionally disturbed. So, what you've got is a lot of teenagers running around acting "poor me and therefore don't mess with me". It's the silliest thing since punk. No, I take that back, sillier.
Apparently, delusion is infectious.
Stereo Type but... People that are 'emo' most of them cut themselves, wear skinny jeans, converse, black tshirts and listen to songs such as Pierce the Veil- Bulletproof Love or Jamestown story- Goodbye (I'm sorry). They also are not as social as others and may not have friends. They also are depressed with life and such and think often about killing themselves.
Emo is simply a way of describing one of the personas that people like to try on. People are definitely deliberate about picking up a certain style. Someone who simply was something, as opposed to trying to be something, would probably wear nothing but sweat pants and plain white t-shirts.
Emo is short for "emotional" in some cases.
She's possibly saying she's over-emotional.
Emo is another name for people who so desperately need to belong that they will tie themselves to anything to be part of a group. Its not funny, or cute, or cool, most emo kids try to stick it to the man and be unique, but the style of unique is so lame because it copies every other 'hardcore emo punk rocker kid'.
