If you just looked at TV adverts you would assume that all US Americans are good looking, middle class, & white with 2.4 kids and a dog... It's difficult to say though, as I worked for a US company in London which had a specific European marketing department, who 'Europeanised' most commercials anyway, so you don't necessarily get the full on American version here (UK) There are some errors through lack of local knowledege - Macdonalds recently ran a competition to win World cup final tickets (soccer/football) where the winner had to say why they wanted England to win the World cup. It was won by a kid in Glasgow, Scotland, who said " I don't want them to win I'm Scottish..." (Scotland hadn't even qualified) Basic error about knowing your markets there!
Our advertising reflects who we are as Americans. What we respond to is what you see on TV. All ads are tested and retested for effectiveness among the American people before you ever see them on TV or in magazines. WE are those advertisements. And, how the ads make us look - probably make us look like who we are... Americans.
