Its actually quite difficult to tell the difference. In theory the shape is wrong, but its not so easy to see this and you need to be quite experienced to have a chance. Even then you can be wrong. The best way is to put the contact in. If it moves around too much/is uncomfortable/your vision is a bit blurry then take it out and try it the other way around.
The flipping on your finger is not really a sign you have it the wrong way round. It might be, but there could be other problems. You might not have got the lens on the exact centre of your finger, in which case it deforms, or it might slip off as you put the lens in, again it will deform and it wont' attach to your eye. Try shaking surplus fluid off it, getting it dead centre in your eye and take your eye to your finger as much as possible - the lens is more likely to slip down if you try and bring your finger vertical.
dry your fingers after picking them out of the container first, and if you look at the contact at eye level you should notice a difference as you said the wrong way is it being curved outward
