It is just as bad in the UK. Part of the problem has arisen because the UK Government are far too soft with allowing immigrants and asylum seekers into the UK which has cause a huge strain on our National Health Service.

We have waiting lists for operations up to two years. Lack of beds available. It is now totally stretched to the limit.

There are some **** hospitals in Australia.

A small, rural hospital will sometimes not have a bed available as they may only have 5 or 6, so patients are asked to go home in labour until they really need to come in. Otherwise they will be stuck on a trolley.

Of course hospitals will always find a bed for you either somewhere in the hospital or at another hospital. Transferring you via ambulance or Flying Doctor Service.

I know that even a major outer Melbourne hospital which is always on the news ALWAYS has spare beds somewhere in the hospital. They are just saved for major emergency admissions.

No our system is not broken.

It's better than paying and going bankrupt like in some countries.

That's really sad and obviously distressing to the lady and her family. Although, I must admit I've been very fortunate when it's come to emergency surgery. Four times now since 1979, my life was saved due to great care and attention by the medical staff at Brisbane's Mater Hospital when I was raced straight into surgery, so I can't complain about the terrific treatment for myself. It just doesn't seem fair that a woman in obvious distress while in the last stages of trying to bring her little baby into our world is treated so shabbily. The health system really should look at reorganising the priority standards when it comes to higher risk patients.

We take the health system for granted.

A lot of people not saying all cost us tax payers money by living soley on social sercurity.

People even come on holidays from overseas and use there realatives health cards to get free treatment.

Honestly if you want to be treated as royalty and first class pay for it and the best way is through private health insurance.

I don't know what kind of health system you have in Australia, but that is inexcusable. This is what I'm afraid is going to happen in the U.S. once Obama gets his government-run health care going. It's really worrisome what is going on here. I agree there need to be changes, improvements made, but I don't see that happening. I see, to be blunt, socialism in action. I think quality care will go way down, waiting times will go way up, costs for the average American will go way up, and individual freedom and choice will be severely curtailed. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Sorry, I don't know what your situation is there, but all I can say is, that should never have happened, and they should be investigating that to make sure it doesn't happen again. Both the mother and child could have died. I know, because I had to have an emergency c-section with my first child. I was hemorrhaging, and if they had sent me home, we'd both have died, 100% sure. Thank God, they knew what they were doing!

I live in India ....Our country has more villages than metropolitan cities ....here people mostly depend on Herbal medicines....which is better than English medicines coz it does not have side effects...Pregnancy and delivery are not a problem for villagers....My mother gave birth to 12 children...... only for the first one she went to the hospital .... the rest were born at home itself as she couldn't afford the hospital charges. - cool

the solution is to have our taxes which are many paid to hospitals instead of politans we are over Governed i believe in Local Govt and Commonwealth Govt should be enough we dont need state Govt as well

go back to the way it use to be put some of the money from the golden casket ( lotto ) back into the health system

yeah your governmewnt should look at it. if you compare it with other countries, oz's health system is quite better. in india, i have learned that nearly 40% of the population is suffering from T.B.
