How do I know what size portable pa system, is appropriate for what size room?
For example, what's a system that can be used for audiences of up to 500 people. This would be used for a stage hypnosis show so it would have 1 or 2 wireless mics hooked up and one ipod. Really, I'd like to know how the different watts match up to the size of the room or audience.

If you don't need a lot of bass, you can get away with a pretty small system. Two speakers with around 150 watts each should do just fine if you are using the system for mainly speech:

Whatever you get make sure it has at least four inputs (most have more than that).
It really depends on how much you have to spend and how small and portable the system needs to be.
