I just rescued a 4.5 year old lab/chow mix. He is used to being outside all day in a fenced yard. I do not have fenced yard yet and would like him to stay inside. But he has already pooped in the house (not peed). What do I need to do to prevent this? I take him out about evey 2 hours and recently gated the upstairs (which is where he pooped). Any other ideas?

House break him. When he poops, put his nose almost in it and say NO! NO! NO! in a loud voice then take him outside immediately. Let him stay out there for a while to get the idea its not cool to poop in the house. When he poops outside praise the hell out of him and give him a treat. Enough of this and he will get the idea. They are not stupid dogs. I had a lab and chow mix for 8 years and She was the smartest dog I've ever had up until I got this pittbull. You have to pay attention to him all the time so as to catch him before he goes in the house. Catching him in the act and putting him outside to finish is what will let him know. GOod luck.
Crate him when you are not with him. You should try and treat this like you just got a puppy, yes I know he is an older dog so it will take longer to make this situation better. Take him to the same spot each time to potty and praise him when he does so. Control feeding and watering times and portions. You food should hav guidelines for his weight. They should receive water 24 hours a day BUT when training, I would do this on a schedule. Keep working at it and be patient, with an adult dog it will be a lot of work. I am not sure about labs, but they seem to be smart dogs.
I agree with crate training your dog. It'll teach him to hold it until it's time to go as well, as helping control the situation for you. NEVER rub the dogs nose in it. That is just cruel. You wouldn't do that to a child when they have an accident, you teach them, as you should with your dog. What I was told to do, and it worked, was every morning,t he first thing is take them out, they should be in the grass or wherever you want to go ASAP, then reward with a treat while still outside after they go potty. The vet had told me if you wait until you go inside to give the treat, they think they're being rewarded for just coming inside. The treat needs to be associated with going potty. Then every 2 hours or so, or watch for signs, take your doggie outside. Make sure the crate isn't too big either. If it's too big, that leaves room for them to go potty, it should be just big enough to turn around and lay down comfortably. Stick with the potty training and it'll get better, but please don't rub your doggies nose in it at all. That's just mean.
Oh and we also were told to never take water away fromt he dog, but to limit how much they get before. So, we picked up the water at 9pm cause we went to bed at 10pm. So that was the last time outside for the night. If you're up later then of course use times that will work for you. But that's it.
crate train properly
establish a regular feeding/walking schedule
good luck,,, that is not an easy mix
