How do sports "eliminate" stress?

I don't play sports because my stress doubles whenever I do, but I have been told(a few years ago, but life issues like stress don't change that quickly) that "scientific" studies show that playing sports can eliminate stress. Clearly my personal experience denies some sort of scientific theorem or something, assuming the research can be confirmed.

Therefore, in addition to this question's answer, please provide some scientific information(research, tests, and all the other stuff of the scientific method) that prove the answer.
