i always wondered about this because, it's not like you can practice and scouts come out looking for you. can't really start your own team....
how do racing teams know where to look for F1 racing drivers like Lewis Hamilton?

Mostly it's at the Go-karting regional events you start, then as you progress you reach the nationals where if you make a name for yourself you might get spotted by one of the big teams and put on a fast track scheme through Formula Renault/Ford, Formula 3000, GP2 then F1.
If not a big team then a small racing team may take you on and you have to build up a reputation to be taken on by other teams in each division. It helps to have a big constructor bank rolling you all the way, otherwise have RICH parents. There is obviously much more involved but thats the general idea.
F1 driver usually start in the F Ford class in Europe. These drivers get paid very little and have experience in Carts, that is different than carts here in the US. Basically it comes down to being noticed and the survival of the fittest, so to speak.
Most race drivers get started in karts. If you can win enough, people will notice you, give you money, sponsorship, and sometimes even a factory ride. Keep on winning and people from other series will eventually notice you. Having wealthy parents that can support your racing career is a huge plus.
I don't know as much about F1, but most Nascar drivers started really young in go-kart races and moved up from there into bigger engine go-karts and eventual into dirt track racing.
