I'm trying build build my abs to become even more noticable which is hard cuz I'm really skinny but when I do my crunches I feel that I don't go far enough up but I am feeling the strain in my mid-lower abs. Am I just being paranoid?

no no no you just need more practice, stretch first tho, and you don't have to go all the way, I say about 45 degree is good enough, if you want a faster way to gain abs you can look online on ways to gain a faster abs, crunches is a good exercise for ab but try other method as well, such as bicycle.
You can go all the way too your knees or just half way..
