between intense workouts you MUST always have a break of about 48 hours. Your muscles grow during these periods. You could work out everyday (with at least one day a week of complete rest), but then you have to split your sets (so one day back shoulders and arms, the next day abs and legs and maybe chest). Never do the same muscles without a rest of two days. People used to believe that you can do abs everyday, but fact is they are like any other muscles and they need rest, if you do them right. If you don't rest, you do more harm than good.
The jury is still out on whether you can do abs every day, but any kind of strength training only benefits when you take time to rest.
Your muscles need time to rebuild themselves or else you're taking the risk of injury. This is especially true if you're working out for a reason other than general health: e.g. dancers, martial artists, athletes. A better way is to work out every other day and accept the trade-off of a longer, healthier career rather than quick gains.
