My dog, who is 14 months old, was diagnosed with Parvo this morning. (And yes, he was vaccinated)
He had virtually no symptoms, just hadn't really eaten anything and was more tired than usual, but he had been exposed to a dog with Parvo, and my gut feeling was that something was not right. According to my vet, his chances are better since it was caught early. I am just wondering if anyone has had a dog this age get Parvo and survive? I am worried to death about it, and I was hoping for some input from someone who had been in this situation before.
Update:The vet is treating him, as I know home care would pretty much mean a death sentence.

Parvo is a tough but I rescue dogs and those I've had, survived. I never really know a rescue's age so I can't say, definitively that I had a case at 14 months but here is what I did to help my survive. #1 - since Parvo is deadly and my rescues cases were bad, they were all hospitalized for a period. #2 - if you see the dog is on the decline in the hospital, ask the vet if they give PLASMA transfusions. In fact, ask your vet that anyway. A lot of vets that don't have Plasma on hand don't even mention that life-saving tactic to the parents, or they are completely ignorant to it. Either way, Plasma transfusions were the only want 2 of my rescues survived. #3 - boost their immunity with a supplement I consider to be the best available. It's a micro-algae supplement with over 4,000 nutrients. It have been imperative to saving/healing a lot my rescues. You want the Holistic F3 formula. I put a link below in the source section. The F2 formula is a great "daily" supplement, but the F3 has extra antioxidants and is formulated for dogs suffering from illness (or recovery from surgery). Your vet can even give the supplement in the hospital. #4 - once your dog is back home, OxE-Drops (anti-bacterial / anti-viral / anti-fungal) assists with the recovery by further attacking the virus. GIVE ALL MEDS YOUR VET PRESCRIBES. My prayers are with your little one.
I'll bet your dog did not get the FULL series of parvo shots. Often people claim their dog is vaccinated when it only had one or two puppy shots. That's not enough, since if the passive immunity they get from nursing is strong, it inactivates the earliest parvo shots. It's rare for dogs older than 3-4 months when they get their last parvo shot to develop the disease, and if they DO, they already have some antibodies so have less severe symptoms and a good chance at surviving.
Hospitalization at a facility with 24/7 nursing care is always more successful than home-care.
Since he's an older puppy, he has that going for him. His immune system is stronger than a 8 week old puppy. Plus you caught it early and thats another plus. I'd think his chances of making it are rather high.
It's not incredibly common for older dogs to get it, but it does happen.
The fact that he is older I would think would give him a better chance, seeing as he has a more developed immune system to fight it off.
Yes I had a dog that was sick with parboil and it did surrive. It took a lot of effort but he made it.I gave him Gatorade in a dropper bout every 2 hours for several day.I also gave him a raw egg made him swallow this helps with his stomach.good luck with your dog.the main thing is to keep him hydrated
yes older dogs that aren't up to date on shots will get parvo from sick dogs
just listen to vet and let them treat
