Probably not a very good brand of dog food.. I recommend spending a bit more money and get a good quality dog food. The cheap dog food goes right through the dog, literally, the body can't even retain any of the vitamins or goodness because there aren't any in cheap dog food.... buy a good quality food and you'll see a difference in the dog's health.. and the number of poops per day will drastically be reduced to the normal once or twice.
Your dog is not on the right kind of dog food. Put him on Science Diet or Iams, and you'll notice a big difference with him going in about two weeks, or less. If he's an adult, he really shouldn't go over two times daily, at the most.
It could be the norm for your particular dog. However you might find that switching his diet to something more easily digested like Nature's Balance, Science Diet or another premium dog food. When more of the food is digested, less is left to pass in bowel movements.
you may be giving him cheaper food. the better brands of food, are higher and protein and produce a more compact stool. also try to keep away from soft food, as it just makes it looser - dogs are fine with dry as long as their teeth are in good shape and you provide plenty of fresh water
