If you actually mean "What is it that causes America to be called a 'republic' ?" then here is the correct answer.
We vote for representatives, who vote for us and who are not required to vote as we might want them to vote.
This prevents direct democracy, which requires that all the people be informed of all the intricacies of all laws.
How is a direct democracy supposed to vote on laws effecting Homeland Security when many of the reasons for voting "for" or "against" are based on secret information that only legislators are privy to? I mean, if we let the whole world know WHY we are making this or that law, the enemy would know how to get around it.
But take something domestic. Do you know enough about the farming industry that you could vote on whether certain tax deductions are fair and legal, or harmful to the industry, or harmful to other industries, or just out and out unethical or unConstitutional?
One more factor for instituting a Republic is that direct democracy often denies the rights of the minority. This can still happen, but it can't happen because white supremacists are voting against blacks and immigrants; or because the Religious Right is voting against homosexuals. (Although that has actually happened, as you know, and because it is denying the rights of a minority, I expect most of the laws to be struck down in court.)
Because that is the form of government that the Constitution enacts. The founding fathers were, first and foremost, working to provide checks and balances. A republic checks the power of each branch of government against the others, and checks the power of the people by the use of representative democracy as opposed to the more direct variant.
Because it doesn't have a monarch / because our Founding Fathers didn't want us to have a monarch (depending on the exact question you were asking).
Historically and internationally, a republic is a government without a monarch, regardless whether it's democratic or not. So North Korea is a republic, but it's not a democracy; the UK is a democracy but not a republic. The US is both.
Of course, here in the US, we equate republic with representative democracy, as opposed to direct democracy. But that's just us.
America is a democratic republic. Its leaders are chosen by the people, but we have one person ruling by the authority of the people.
When the Founding Fathers were creating our new nation, they took several political concepts and laws to prevent dictatorships or an overthrow of the government . We also have civilian rule of the military because like oil and water, politics and the military don't mix.
The Code of Hammurabi, the Magna Carta, the Republic of Rome, and the Democracy of Greece are the basis of our Constitution. That is why we are referred to as "The Great Experiment".
Because IT'S IN THE CONSTITUTION. A REPUBLIC is government OF THE PEOPLE... BY THE PEOPLE... and FOR THE PEOPLE... and a DEMOCRACY is a government OF THE PEOPLE.. FOR THE PEOPLE... BY A SMALL GROUP OF THE PEOPLE... it's why special interest groups can control the why that government works in a Democratic form of government.
Anyway.. AmeriKa IS ... or at least WAS a REPUBLIC... it's even it the pledge of allegiance.. "AND to the REPUBLIC for which it stands".
Unfortunately, with the past 7 years of George Bush and the NEO-CONS destroying the government... AmeriKa is now a FASCIST Government... and if you don't believe that.. then look up the meaning of "FASCIST" in ANY dictionary.
Because democracy can do crazy things if there are no checks and balances.
For example if 51% of the people decide that people over 70 years are a burden to the society and should be put to sleep, what can rest of the 49% of population to do?

Do you see the point?
America is a group of countries that are republics
Monarchies were not popular in America
In Mexico there were two emperors, but both were shot
Brazil had also two emperors. Those were not shot
Because the average American is too stupid to effectively manage a direct democracy.
Because it's the most efficient form of government!
Because thats the right way to go!
