The gas gauge sending unit works like a reostat. A float assembly works the reostat and sends messages to the dashboard gauge. Fuel additives can build up on the reostat surface and give false readings at the dashboard. A fuel system cleaner might help, but ultimately, you will need to replace the fuel gauge sending unit. It is located inside the gas tank. Emptying the tank, removing the tank from the car, and replacing the sending unit can run you a couple hundred dollars.
