I know this is probably asked a lot, but I've been thinking really seriously about the army lately but I want to know what to expect and what to look out for,any input from current soldiers of veterans would be appreciated. What kind of duties do you handle? What keeps you busy? How often do you see combat? When do you get downtime? What do you do during that time? What drills and exercises do they make you do?

It all depends on what mos (military occupation specialty) is. I was a truck driver (best job ever). When I went to Iraq we worked all week and sometimes overnight. Being a truck driver you take people and/or supplies to the different camps or bases in Iraq. Some places we went were as close as 30 mins away or as far as 5 hrs away (before all the delays from IEDs (improvised explosive device) When we went to the furthest base we'd unload and then sleep overnight & leave in the morning. When we didn't have a run which was rare we'd work on the trucks (check fluids, make sure everything's ok) and go home around 5 like a normal day in the states. Wake up and repeat for 7 months (1 yr in the army)
Now you really don't see combat but the army's a bit special. I suggest you don't go into the army b/c they aren't as disciplined as marines are (look at the death rate between branches) &, just in case you don't remember Jessica Lynch, they'll leave their own behind. I don't know what the army does for training if they even do. I just know they get a lot of time off from friends that are in and army recruiters. The marine corps isn't as hard core as it use to be & they're letting just about anyone in now but they're still disciplined. But if that's what branch you want to go into go for it. I say join the air force. They're spoiled.
like said above...all depends on your MOS. If you are admin, you could expect to sit in a nice, A/C, room behind a computer and a phone and get fat and nasty like pogs do and the only combat you will see will be an occassional mortar or two or you can pick a real MILITARY job and become infantry. Yeah, you will do foot patrols, mounted patrols, cordons, entry control point duty, man observation posts unless the RCT you came with has a PRC (Provisional Rifle Company), you might be tasked to snatch and grab missions, riot control...dude, you will do **** that even your MOS isnt supposed to do...needs of the Corps. You will be dirty, and you will smell worse than you look. You will see your fair share of combat, I gurantee you.
All depends on your mos. You could be road marching all day, patrolling in humvees or sitting at a computer all day.
